John Southworth - Keynoter & Pacific Team Leader
John Southworth has been a foundation piece for Global Learn Day from the very first event. At this moment he is being called upon to wear many hats, thus the purpose of this blog post. The first role that John will play is to be Keynoter for the Central Pacific Region. This puts him in very good company with all the other GLDTEN keynoters.
Additionally, during our last stop, he serves as both moderator and ringleader to those who we would like to feature in the whole of the western Pacific region. Please view John Southworth’s companion GLDTen Blog for more on that.
Among our favorites in the Central Pacific Bruce Best who sent us this note a few days ago
“i am in the outer islands of yap from 20 sept to 9 or tenth, oct ….maybe i could report from outer islands …over HF radio …where the paddle hits the water….
I will be installing worldspace rx only satellite network to go with my HF email solar powered network …receives DE and telehealth info that is uplinked by the centers…15 islands in 18 day…”
The third role that John plays is to gather from a wide variety of friends and associates other speakers and participants. That list is a long one, loaded with gems who are doing extraordinary work in that part of the world.
It also means that some of those we would like to feature could do so in the East Asian Region - especially those who will be attending a conference in Okinawa. (For us as organizers, this would make a nice “bookend” — talking with those who would speak about one p.m. Tokyo time Sunday October 8; and then talking to John and Bruce etc. at noon Honolulu time, also on Sunday (7:00 a.m. October 9 in Tokyo). Yes, it’s confusing; but that’s also part of the fun.
Here is a short list of those John is “rounding up”
Kathy Anderson who has been with us in the past and “knows educators from Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Hawaii”.
John Thatcher, Principal of the Connections New Century Charter School in Hilo as well as this year’s PDK/Hawaii Chapter President.
Julia Morton-Marr (who lives in Canada) also a PDK member
Shigeru Narita and Curtis Ho (past GLD participants, now in Hygo )
What’s next? Those persons mentioned should contact John Southworth or John Hibbs so we can firm up times, blog entries, conversation.
All participants should know we do everything but use “two tin cans tied to a string” to make participation fun and easy. At minimum, all it takes is a phone call, using Skype or inexpensive calling cards. We webcast all voices in the phone room and of course we archive like crazy. We list all the URL’s so those listening to the webcast can point their browser to the appropriate web site. We have a neat text chat room where questions and comments are carefully reviewed.
How long will you speak? That depends on you — but most sessions last between 30 to 60 minutes; most speakers give a short thumbnail of their “talk” and then answer questions from the moderators, other panelists and the general audience. We like to make it fun and compelling.
What are the most important questions we would like you to address? They are these
What are you doing in your part of the world to increase access to education?
What are you doing in your part of the world that is novel, exciting and likely to motivate students to learn more?
What are you doing in your part of the world that broadcasts what you do so more will know about what you are doing?

I am excited about the connections that we will create through this venue. Region A of Phi Delta Kappa is a leading voice in advocacy for public education, and we can join together to have a larger voice through these technological means. Commendations to all those involved in arrangin for this to happen.
