John Southworth, Keynoter, Central Pacific
Bio: John Southworth was Director of Technology for the UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) Student Ambassador Program (StAmP Net) for 2001-2004. He works with Distance Education at the University of Hawaii Education Laboratory School.

He served as 1999-2000 President of the Hawaii Science Teachers Association (HaSTA) and head of the Ed Tech Section. During 2002 he was President of the Pan Pacific Distance Learning Association (PPDLA) which is the local affiliate for the United States Distance Learning Association
(USDLA).
His ethnic background includes English, Irish, and German.
He grew up in (Pomona) California and attended Pomona College (Chemistry major), the University of Bristol, England (Biochemistry studies), and the University of Hawaii (Oceanography major).
He taught science and math in the United States Peace Corps in Malaysia for 18 months.
He has been on the staff of CRDG and UHS since 1980.
From 1995 -1998 he served as Coordinator for the Technology Collaborative for the Pacific as part of ARC Associates, Pacific Region. This project involved implementation of the Regional Technology in Education Consortia program of the United States Department of Education.
He coordinated the Chem 21 (Chemistry for the 21st Century) collaborative project with Kamehameha Schools during 2000-2001. Additionally, he started the Lab School Distance Learning - Technology elective class that was part of the CTAHR’s “Student Ambassador Program” (StAmP Net) during that year. That year the class is entitled DL-E: Distance Learning - Enrichment. Members of the class provide professional development technology training (totally by DL-T means) for CTAHR and local school StAmP Net participants.
In November 2001 he began working with the technical aspects of StAmP Net and continued through the 2003-2004 school year.
For the 2004-2005 school year he taught the Computer Literacy class given all 9th grade students at the Education Laboratory School.
For the 2005-2006 school year he was Technology Director of the STARnet Project, which involved use of the DL-E class in mentoring 24 Big Island science teachers and their students.
He has coordinated the Central Pacific Global Learn Day portion several years…often bringing in remote participants from various international locations.

The site documents the use of John Southworth’s Electronic Field Trip model that was developed in the 1980s at the UH Education Laboratory School. It was developed in collaboration with the UH Medical Technology Division. It includes a video introduction along with background info and the lesson plan process….provided by the LEI Aloha ETEC Connections resource for helping the process of classroom technology integration. The “LEI” in LEI Aloha means Learning Enhancement through Innovation. The team’s mission is dedicated to supporting each other in providing high quality service to educators for the enhancement of teaching and learning through innovative uses of technology. This video features John Southworth’s inaugural Electronic Field Trip model that was first used with Lab School chemistry classes as a means of showing students one career that uses chemistry.
