Keynoters Vint Cerf & Sir John Daniels

It is not for nothing that my introductory remarks make mention of “The Thrilla In Manila” and the lessons learned from its chief promoter, Don King. Just as Mohammed Ali and Joe Frazier were the greatest of all heavyweights, I think it is fair to say that Vint Cerf and Sir John Daniels are heavyweights of equal stature in their own realm — one inside the world of education; the other inside the world of technology.

One only needs to Google either name to confirm the accuracy of the above. Enter Vint’s name in the search window and Google reports back 1,650,000 references. Enter Sir John’s and the number is just slightly less — 1,270,00.

The short of it is that Vint lays solid claim to being among those who are “the father(s) of the Internet”. More to the point, Vint now holds the title “Chief Internet Evangelist” - for a small company named Google!

For Sir John, the short of it is that this Canadian earned his knighthood from the Queen for “…changing the landscape of higher education in the United Kingdom”. Now, Sir John leads the Commonwealth of Learning which is organized to advance education in 52 countries around the world. While his Headquarters is in the very beautiful city of Vancouver, the fact is that almost every week of the year Sir John is aloft attending to what must be the most demanding job in the whole world of education.

Of course we are enormously pleased and proud that once more they will grace our stage…their second time with us - Sir John in GLD3 and Vint in GLD4. There is no need to talk further about their credentials.

What does need mention is that the first couple of questions we expect to ask are these –

This one directed to Sir John — “Sir, in the last decade a company called Google has changed the landscape of the planet. Yet, for my son, who is now in college in Colorado, not much has changed — or seems to. Why is that?

The follow up questions, these directed to Vint: “Sir, what lessons should those in education learn from an ‘Evangelist’? For us, especially in the Ivory Tower, “promotion” is (pretty much) a dirty word; yet the University of Phoenix is spending millions to put their name on a new stadium. Do they have it right? Will more effective “promotion” accelerate the works of many we will feature during Global Learn Day? And if the answer to that question is positive, what can the corporate world do to help people like Sir John?

Please: Join us on Global Learn Day as we stage the two heavyweights of our time. It should be quite a Thrilla.
